Left-handed hurler set to join Sanford staff

Sanford. ME- The Sanford Mainers have announced a contract agreement with left-handed pitcher Mark Schmidt. Schmidt, hailing from Gorham, ME, just finished up his sophomore campaign at the University of Southern Maine.

Schmidt, at 5’11 and 190 pounds, was a perfect 6-0 for the Huskies staff in 2008. In 12 appearances including nine starts, the southpaw posted a 3.97 ERA with two complete games. He fired 55.1 total innings and allowed 50 hits while striking out 51 opposing hitters. He helped lead Southern Maine to a 36-14 overall record and a second-place finish in the Little East Conference.

Schmidt finished his 2007 freshman season with a 2-1 record and a solid 3.35 earned run average. The Gorham product was also a finalist in 2006 for Mr. Baseball in the state of Maine. Schmidt is now the 11th pitcher currently listed on the Mainers roster.

The Mainers return to the diamond Wednesday night at 6:30 at Goodall Park to host the North Shore Navigators as part of a home-and-home series. Sanford will travel to Lynn, MA on Thursday to take on the Navigators.
