Mainers Drop Second Straight to Navigators, Fall 13-2
Sanford hosts Vermont Friday night.
Lynn, MA – For the second
straight night, the Sanford Mainers fall to the North Shore Navigators, this
time 13-2 on the road Thursday night at Fraser Field. The Mainers fell in an
early 4-0 hole and watched the Navigators bust it open late as Sanford’s record
drops to 2-2 on the young season.
Already leading 1-0, the Navigators tacked on three more in the fifth. Sean
McNaughton started the frame with a double that one-hopped the wall in
left-center. Peter Fottsee followed that up with a bunt single. McNaughton then
came in to score on a wild pitch with Mike Provencher at the plate. Tyler Kuehll
plated two more with an RBI double to left to make it a 4-0 ballgame.
The Mainers would cut their deficit in half in the top of the sixth. With two
outs and Mark Micowski on second base, Branson Joseph drilled an RBI double to
left-center. A.J. Casario followed that up with a run-scoring single to left to
make it a 4-2 score.
North Shore would break it open in the seventh. After plating one in the sixth
for a three-run cushion, the Navigators sent 10 men to the plate in a six-run
seventh inning. Two RBI hits by Kent Graham, McNaughton and Nick Belcher off of
reliever Jeff DeCarlo were responsible for the six-run outburst. The Navigators
would tally two more in the eight to polish off the scoring at 13-2.
Sanford starter Mark Schmidt suffered the loss. He lasted four innings, allowing
one run on two hits, while walking three and hitting two batters. Kyle Davis and
Jeff DeCarlo came on in relief and combined to allow 12 runs in five innings of
work. Mike DiCato was the winner for the Navigators. He gave up just two runs on
four hits in six frames.
