Mainers Double Up Pittsfield 4-2 in 10 Innings

Pittsfield, MA – Kyle Groth went 3-5 with three RBIs, with the big blow a 10th-inning, two-run triple as the Sanford Mainers defeated the Pittsfield Dukes in extras 4-2 Friday night at Wahconah Park.

With the game tied 2-2 in the 10th, Mark Micowski was hit by a pitch to lead off the frame. Matt Nandin then reached on a bunt single, avoiding the tag of first baseman Matt Adams. After a sacrifice bunt by Kevin Reimer, Groth tagged a triple into the gap in right-center to plate Micowski and Nandin and give the Mainers their 4-2 advantage.

The Mainers started the scoring in the first. With Micowski on third and only one away, Groth delivered an RBI groundout to give Sanford an early one-run lead. That lead would stand till the seventh, with the Dukes stranding eight runners in the first six frames.

Pittsfield would take the lead with two runs in their half of the seventh. With runners on first and second and one away and Jeff DeCarlo now on the mound, Chris Edmondson ripped an opposite field single to left to score Craig Hurtler. Sanford would get an out when J.T. Musso was caught in a pickle between second and third. The Dukes would keep the inning alive with a couple of walks to load the bases. With Jason Krizan at the plate, DeCarlo fired a wild pitch allowing Edmonson to score and give the Dukes a short-lived one-run edge.

The Mainers would get even in the eighth. A.J. Casario walked to lead off the frame. After a wild pitch, Scott Ferrera came through with an RBI single to left to plate Casario and tie the game up at two apiece.

Jason Bowman lasted seven and a third innings and gave up just one run on six hits. The right-hander walked two and struck out four. DeCarlo allowed one run in one inning of work. Nick Cenatiempo retired all eight batters he faced in picking up the win. Dukes’ starter Alex MacKenzie fired eight innings and allowed two runs. Luke Mazzanti was draped with the loss for Pittsfield.
