FOUR MAINERS HEADED TO ALL-STAR GAME
SANFORD – Four
Sanford Mainers will represent the team as members of the Northern
Division All-Star Team at the NECBL’s 14th annual All-Star Game on
Sunday, July 22 at Joe Wolfe Field in North Adams, Mass. The rosters for
both the Northern and Southern Division squads were announced by league
commissioner Mario Tiani on Monday.
Bubba Ruddy (Cypress CC/Orange, Calif.) will start the game at catcher
for the Northern Division. He currently leads all catchers in the league
by having thrown out 15 base-runners attempting to steal bases. Ruddy is
currently hitting .243 and is tied for the Mainers’ team lead in runs
batted in with 18. The junior has started 23 of Sanford’s 31 games at
the catcher’s position. Earlier this season, Ruddy put together a
12-game hitting streak and has hit the Mainers’ only home run of the
year.
Brian Kemp (St. John’s/East Rockaway, N.Y.) will join Ruddy in the
starting lineup as one of the Northern Division’s three outfielders.
Kemp leads the Mainers and is fourth in the league with a .362 batting
average. The freshman has started 30 of Sanford’s 31 games in
centerfield and currently leads the league in hits (46) and stolen bases
(23-for-25). Earlier this season, Kemp put together a 15-game hitting
streak.
Jeff Grantham (St. John’s/Randolph, N.J.) will join his college teammate
Kemp in North Adams as a reserve middle infielder for the Northern
Division squad. Grantham is the only Mainer other than Kemp currently
hitting above .300. The junior shortstop is hitting .324 and is tied for
the team lead in triples (3) and runs batted in (18). Earlier this
season, Grantham matched Kemp’s hitting streak with a 15-game streak of
his own.
Last but not least, Kevin Landry (William & Mary/Vienna, Va.) heads to
Joe Wolfe Field as a reserve pitcher for the Northern Division. On the
season, Landry has been one of Sanford’s most consistent starters,
posting a 2-2 record with a 2.21 earned-run average that is tops among
Mainers starters. Over six starts, Landry has pitched 36.2 innings,
given up 14 runs (nine earned) on 29 hits, walked 19 and struck out a
team-leading 34. Opponents are hitting only .218 off the right-hander
who has started the only two shutouts of the season delivered by the
Sanford pitching staff.
The Mainers return to action on Tuesday, July 17 when they visit the
Manchester Silkworms. First pitch is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. at
Northwest Park in Manchester, Conn. Matt Janik, Russell Luna and Merrill
Meyers will have all the action at http://www.sanfordmainers.com.
